An article I just read from rawvegansource.com

I just discovered this place in Redmond, Washington and I can't wait to go check it out!

Article - Why Go Raw?

Article - Why Go Raw?
We've all heard the statistics: 2 out of 3 people are overweight, 1 out of 3 people are obese, 2 out of 5 people will develop cancer in their lifetime, 1 out of 2 people will die from heart disease or cancer (both consequences of poor lifestyle choices), and for the first time in recorded history, some people are now projecting that the lifespan of today's children will be less than that of their parents' due of the rise of many chronic diseases and health conditions.
Basic health today generally is the sum of three broad components: what we eat, the toxic burden of our body as a result of the toxins in our environment, and our lifestyle/outlook on life (which includes attitude, exercise, spirituality, etc.). Of these, the easiest to address because we all have to eat is considering our food choices.
99.99999999999% of the planet thrives on a raw food, uncooked natural diet. It's only man and his domesticated animals that eat food that's cooked, processed, and often modified from its natural state. And, it's no coincidence that it's only man and his domesticated animals that are dying and getting sick with chronic diseases far sooner than comparable natural populations.
When food is cooked, all enzymes, most vitamins and many minerals are destroyed, thus the cooking process removes most of the nutrition from our food before it even reaches our mouth. This fact, along with the rise of big agricultural farming practices which produce more and more food containing less and less nutrition is why so many of our bodies cry for more and more food to make up for the lack of nutrition we get, thus one of the main causes in the rise of obesity.
Eating raw and living foods consists of aligning our bodies back with our natural way of eating. A raw diet consists of fruits, vegetables, live sprouts, sprouted nuts and seeds eaten in their natural (preferably organic) state and prepared foods heated below 112 degrees. 112 degrees is the point where enzymes, the building blocks of life, start to be destroyed by the cooking process.
Some of the many benefits of eating raw include: weight loss with little or no effort, dramatic overall health improvement, huge increase in energy (one of the main reasons being because the raw diet digests so quickly and moves through the body 3 to 4 times quicker than cooked food, much energy is freed up for other needs besides digestion), clear, more vibrant skin, amazing improvements with blood sugar disorders, big benefits relating to healing arthritis, and greater mental clarity and a brighter outlook on life.
In addition, and of great importance, is how the raw diet benefits people suffering from cancer. Cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment. One of the main benefits of eating raw is we create an alkaline internal environment. The two leading causes of acidifying the body are eating sugar and animal products - thus, our current cancer "epidemic". There are now many raw/living food health retreats that are having astronomically successful cancer cure rates just by putting people on a raw food diet. My wife, Susan, is one such example. Having considered herself a very healthy, 25 year vegetarian, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 4 years ago. Immediately switching to a raw diet, 9 months later, she was cancer free (without surgery or radioactive iodine chemotherapy as was recommended by "traditional medicine"). She also went from a size 12 to a size 2 without even trying.
In summary, raw vegan food brings our bodies back into balance and allows us to have the health and longevity which is our birthright. As raw consciousness goes mainstream, more and more foods, products, books, restaurants and raw lifestyle choices are coming into being making this an easier and easier transition. And, speaking of transitioning, if it fits your personality or if you have a serious health challenge, jump right in and go 100% raw, if that's what feels right. A more realistic goal might be 80% raw, which is where the phenomenon of the body mounting an immune response in reaction to the cooked food you just ate, ceases and the real "raw magic" begins. Make it all about adding good things in, not about giving anything up.
One way to approach it is in stages. Stage one is about moving toward eating organically. Stage two is about moving toward a totally plant based diet. Stage three is about moving toward a raw living foods lifestyle. Or, in the simplest terms, just eat more raw fruits and veggies! As your taste buds re-awaken, you'll realize that raw not only makes you feel great, it tastes great. On a planet reaching environmental crisis, the raw lifestyle is the gentlest, most sustainable choice we can all make to keep this planet green and thriving.
Tom Armstrong has thrived on a 100% raw vegan diet for nearly 4 years now, losing his arthritis, periodic colds and 25 pounds along the way. He and Susan operate RawVegan Source, a raw buyer's club in Redmond, as well as Armstrong Park Organics, a 1/2 acre permaculture farm on their property, and can be reached at tom@rawvegansource.com or 425 868-2332.

I've been a little LAZY!!!

 Hey everyone!
Sorry it's been so long. So much is going on in my life right now and it has left me little time for blogging as well as making awesome-rawsome creations. For almost the last month it's been just salads, grains and smoothies over here but over this past weekend, I got a big surprise that has boosted my raw creativity. My wonderful hubby had been sadly standing by watching me drag through each day without the excitement I usually have while preparing food so he went to Macy's huge sale and bought me a new ice cream machine and a new juice machine! VERY EXCITING!! And that has kicked my butt into getting back into raw creative gear!

So what have I made so far? Well for starters, I learned how to crack open a young thai coconut (thanks to Chef Zoe) which led me to making a delicious raw vanilla-coconut ice cream completely dairy free created by Chef Zoe. It was OUT OF THIS WORLD! We ate ours with fresh strawberries and cacao nibs. Check it out... http://youtu.be/hsfFJUqv-9M if you would like to make it, you can get specialty ingredients at her company on line http://rawbundant.com/ or your local healthy store but Zoe has the best prices and wonderful service.

Next, I've been juicing like crazy! This morning it was Carrot-Apple-Pear but I've been cranking out all different varieties in the last 3 days. What I love best about juicing is that if you have some veggies or fruit that are starting to move into the "GETTING OLD" stage, just juice it! What I really need to do now is to learn some recipes for all this fruit and veggie pulp that I just end up composting. Maybe crackers or crust? I know recipes exist out there.

The next thing I did was make my first almond mylk. I've been buying it at the store already made since my journey began and here is why... mylk bags! They are not cheap! They are not really expensive either but with our budget, I choose to pass on getting one for buying food instead. This is what changed my mind. Mimi Kirk! She has a new video on making a cacao shake and she mentions making almond mylk (one of the ingredients) and she adds that she started using a 1 gallon nylon paint strainer bag that she got at a home improvement store for super cheap! So off I go to check it out for myself and with the change in my car ashtray, I got 2 of these bags for $2.99. Since then, I see that tons of people out there are using these bags but Mimi was the first to show me and I think that's AWESOME!!! They work awesome too and now I need to make something yummy with the almond pulp!

Last, I'm finally starting to grow my own sprouts! I've had the seeds and equipment for some time now but have been a little scared to try it myself. I'm already a wheatgrass professional so I have no idea why I was so scared... Anyway, I'm doing it now so on with the sprouting good time. Here is my first attempt caught on film. Alfalfa sprouts... and of course my beloved wheat grass ready for some fresh soil now.

So all these inspirations have been flowing my way and I'm really happy. I was in such a funk and getting bored with 'my raw life' but now it is back on track. Peace and Love to you Thanks for reading!

A New Non-Cook Book For MEEEEEE!!!!

Hey!! Well, it's been a while since I wrote and here is why. I recently got 'LIVE RAW' by Mimi Kirk, in the mail and I have been devouring every page for the last 2 weeks. I'm so happy!!!! It's a book about raw living as well as great raw recipes and it's just gorgeous! Benjamin loves looking at it too since he is my little kitchen assistant. He especially loves the desert pages!

So, I ordered it off her site http://youngonrawfood.com/ and she autographed the copy for me! She also included a necklace that is a silver ball-chain style with a dog-tag that has 5 inspirational raw living messages on it. Here are a couple pix of the book. It's a wonderful, wonderful book. Please check it out! I can't put it down and I'm looking forward to creating some of the yummies she's got in there.

In addition to all the great tips and food creations, there are wonderful stories all about Mimi and her amazing life. For one, she was voted PETA's Sexiest Vegetarian Over 50 and she was over 70 when she won!

Ice Cream For Breakfast!!

Good morning! How would you like a big bowl of ice cream for breakfast on a beautiful summer morning? Well, I just about hear this request every morning from the Jellybean and little Peanut. And the answer is always ..."Not Today Sweetie". It sucks because I know I would love some too but we have all been taught that ice cream is a special treat after you finish your 'real food' so on I go preparing the kids nutritious breakfast. Well, then along comes a commercial for a new kitchen appliance that makes soft serve ice cream out of frozen bananas and what ever other fruits and flavors you want to add. The kids see this and it's all over!!! So, should I get this machine? Am I even allowed to say the name of it without permission? I'll have to find out. But here is what I say now... YES!!! LET'S ALL HAVE ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST!!!

I do not have this machine (yet) but I do have a food processor!! A very good friend on Facebook told me she does it this way and so I busted out 3 frozen bananas and 3 ripe strawberries (all organic) and popped them in my little 3-cup processor. It got stuck a few times so I added a little almond milk, about 3 tablespoons (from a carton) and just for fun, about a teaspoon of raw agave nectar. Spectacular doesn't even describe it! Here is a picture of it. I would say it made 3 child size servings. It is very creamy. I tried to get fancy by sticking mint leaves in there but the kids just threw that out. Oh well. For sure will be making this one again. You gotta try it!

My first blog post!

Hey there everyone! Here I am, LynnInTheRaw joining the millions upon billions of people out there who have started a blog. I hope that my journey takes you through some fun times with me and my family and our decision to live a healthy long life. As parents in our 40's to 2 toddler boys, we realized early on that we wanted to be in their life as long as possible and hopefully see grandchildren someday too. Both the hubby and I come from families that have terrible diets and we grew up not really experiencing much different. We see the outcome of our parents health issues as well as aunts, uncles and grandparents who have fallen downward in their health by the meal choices they made. At least they started families early in their lives! My ultimate goal is to live a 100% Raw Foods lifestyle. I know this will take years to accomplish and with the encouragement of a very good friend, (you know who you are G!) he talked me into documenting the journey. So here we go! Enjoy! xoxo
